Glossary of Terms
Application Programming Interface is a method that allows
programmers to access data over the network. The Region of
Peel does not provide an API to its data library.
Comma-Separated Values is a text format that can be used by
Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet
Spreadsheet format which can be opened by Microsoft Excel,
LibreOffice Calc, and other spreadsheet applications.
Keyhole Markup Language was developed by Keyhole Inc. which was
later acquired by Google. Applications that can use KML to display
data are Google Earth, Google Maps, ESRI ArcGIS Explorer, Adobe
PhotoShop, AutoCAD, etc. KML is an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)
Shapefile (SHP) is a popular geospatial vector data format for
geographic information systems software. Free applications that can
display SHP data are QGIS (display and edit), ESRI ArcGIS Explorer,
Geomatica FreeView, and others.
eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is a file format that
provides data in a text format that machines can easily read.
XML is a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) specification.
